Close your eyes for 20 seconds …. Just imagine how you would feel if when you opened your eyes you still couldn’t see.
There are 37 million people blind in developing countries – 90% of this is preventable. One child goes blind every minute, needlessly. This is a crisis which we can solve with your help.
Right to Sight is an Irish charity which was established by Irish eye surgeon, Kate Coleman, in 2006 to eliminate needless blindness in Africa and Asia. Right to Sight has 20 projects in eight African countries and in India and works alongside Governments and existing charities in order to achieve their goal of eliminating needless blindness. Right to Sight focuses on the training and development of local people to work in these hospitals thereby providing quality eye care with increased productivity leading to sustainability. No patient is ever denied treatment – whether you can pay or not you are given the treatment you need. In 2008 Right to Sight projects helped to deliver c27,000 cataract surgeries and we expect to deliver c40,000 surgeries in 2009.
Right to Sight’s World Record Breaking Pilates attempt, led by Eva Berg, will be held in the RDS on Thursday, 21st May 2009. We have lodged our application with the Guinness Book of Records and are confident that we can break the current record of 623 participants recorded in Canada in 2008. We are looking to all interested groups in to support us in what will be a really fun night with lots of entertainment and the challenge of beating a world record and, most importantly, we will be helping to alleviate the pain and suffering caused by needless blindness. The Pilates class will be a gentle class enabling everybody, even those who have never done Pilates before, to enjoy.
